What is immunisation?
Immunisation is one of the best ways to protect your child against many serious diseases. It works by using a vaccine to stimulate your baby’s immune system.
When should my child be immunised?
The National Immunisation Schedule recommends immunisations start at 6 weeks old to develop protection as soon as possible.
Vaccines to protect against 13 preventable diseases are recommended at specific times during the first 5 years.
It is important to know that if your child has missed a vaccination, it is okay. Tamariki can catch up on most vaccinations.
All vaccines on the National Immunisation Schedule are free for all children under 18.
Where to get immunised
Call your family doctor’s office to ask about immunisations and book an appointment for your child.
You can also get your tamariki immunised at selected Plunket clinics, and at some pharmacies.
Preparing for an immunisation visit
Getting a vaccine can be scary for a little one but it will be easier for them with your support. Below are a few tips to help your child (and you) through the immunisation process:
- it may be easier for you and your child if you take a support person – this can be a whānau member or friend
- try to keep as calm and relaxed as you can, even if your child becomes upset
- bring something for your child to hold during the immunisation, like a stuffed animal or a blanket – you can also use it to help distract your child
- cuddle/hold your child during the procedure, talk calmly and gently stroke your child's arm or back
- offer comfort if your child does cry or become upset
- for pēpi, feeding before, during and after they receive their immunisation can help comfort and soothe them.
