The annual scholarship provides financial support of $3,000 to a full-time nursing student of Ngāi Tahu descent in their final year of study. Shauna was awarded the scholarship in 2024 and is passionate about improving Māori health outcomes.
“One of the biggest areas Māori are struggling with is their health. It means a lot to me to be able to help care for my people and it is an honour to be able to create a comfortable space for those who are vulnerable, in their time of need.’’
Shauna is currently completing her Bachelor of Nursing at Te Pukenga Northtec in Whangārei. Not only did the scholarship support her personal and professional goals, but it was also practical, she says.

Shauna Power in action
“Just before I received the scholarship, my laptop died and I had no idea how I was going to replace it!”
The scholarship commemorates the work of Mere Harper and Ria Tikini – two highly respected Māori midwives and healers from Karitāne who were instrumental in starting Whānau Āwhina Plunket. It aims to support the next generation of Māori nurses.
“I am educating myself in an area where Māori are not thriving, so I can help support iwi Māori to take power over our health and create healthy habits for the next generation to come,” Shauna says.
“My qualification will help contribute to a healthier, brighter future where we as Māori can live stronger for longer mō ngā rangatira ō apōpō [as leaders for our future generations].”
Applications for the 2025 scholarship are open to nursing students of Ngāi Tahu descent who are in their final year of study. Please note the closing date is 1 April 2025.
